Water from rivers, streams, etc.

How would you go abouts making water from a nearby river or steam or pond. drinkable?

how could you do this in an efficient manner without using any power (gas or electricity WTSHTF)?

Fill containers with water from source.
Construct a "sediment filter" from varrying layers of rock, sand, charcoal
collect the filtered water in a clean container
bring the filtered water to a boil
store the treated water in clean containers.

Great no gear way there.

If you have gear, filters come in every size from the hikers straw to the big berky that NGOs use for many people. A prefiltering to remove the big stuff if the water is brown with something inexpensive like coffee filters would increase filter life. I carry iodine too to be extra safe as to microbes, but boiling takes care of microbes. Iodine I would use with water I did not boil.

I have a Katadyn ceramic pump filter that I used to use when I traveled in third world countries. Not effective on viruses, but everything else. We drank out of a puddle filled with cow patties on the way to climb Aconcagua in Argentina and none of us got sick!

Where there is a stream there are springs. Search around the stream you'll find the water coming out of the ground. Dig this area out, usally just a few inches of dirt and leaves over the rock. When you find the water coming out of the rock let it run till clear, enjoy. Most all water coming from a crack in the rock is good to drink.

Wow, that brings back memories... I used to love drinking that fresh spring water when we lived in TN. We would go hiking up in the smokies and NOTHING tasted better than that fresh water bubbling out from a rocky formation.

I do miss that.... and the seasons... well and the mountains..... :bawling:

Closest thing to a spring around where I live is a 4 inch pipe and and a pump.

I am close to the Colorado river, if you want to see some really nasty water, this would be a prime example.

If you are in the mountains, woods etc it is best to find fast running water.

The last thing you want is stagnant water that is sitting still.
